July 11: Springville to Jamestown, New York

Today’s route was almost totally on rural roads with almost no traffic. It didn’t go through very many towns either. What it did have was the Zoar Valley Road, a scenic, bumpy, and very hilly old country road along the Cattaraugus Creek. In an eight mile stretch of this road, there were two steep climbs at more than 20% grade. Fortunately, they weren’t too long, but they were long enough to be memorable….and a bit painful.

Here are some photos from the Zoar Valley Road:

About 20 miles into my ride today, I came across an alpaca farm. Initially, I thought they were llamas. But, as I got closer, I could see that these were different than llamas. I didn’t know what they were, but they were kinda cute, so I took a few photos. Later I showed the pictures to Pat and she knew what they were — alpacas.

We’re in Jamestown, New York tonight. When we arrived in Jamestown, we learned that the town is famous for being the birthplace of Lucille Ball.
