July 2: The Dream Tour gets a visitor
We took a rest day today in Keene, New Hampshire. We take rest days about every fourth day, so that’s not unusual. What’s unusual about this rest day is that we had a visitor.
Wendy James, a long-time friend of ours, moved from Salt Lake City to Plainfield, New Hampshire a couple years ago. As we were approaching New Hampshire, we got in touch by email and phone. It was very fortunate that we were planning a rest day in Keene, because if we were just staying overnight. I’m not sure a visit would have worked out.
It was so nice to see Wendy. She packed a homemade picnic lunch and then drove an hour and a half to Keene to share it with us. We spent about three hours catching up on each others lives.
So, Wendy joins a very select group of people who we have managed to meet up with on our journey across the United States. Many people — friends and relatives — want to meet us when we pass through their part of the country, but we’re finding it difficult to do this. We rarely know exactly where we’re going to be more than 24 hours in advance. Once we decide where we’re going to be, we’re rarely in that place for more than 24 hours. And even if we are, we’re generally very busy making preparations for the next few days of cycling.

It was really nice for you and Pat to make contact with Wendy James. See, you are not so far away from SLC and your friends. It’s not such a big coutnry after all. Glad to know you have turned the corner and are now heading west. We enjoy your blogs and your photos. We look forward to them everyday. M&D
