June 29: Ballardvale, Massachusetts to York Harbor, Maine

The weather forcast for today said things like “heavy rain” and “rain likely”. But, except for a slight misting near Andover, Massachusetts, I managed to stay dry all day. Plus, after I got onto highway 1A after crossing the border into New Hampshire (our twenty-eighth state), I picked up a very nice tailwind. I can’t believe my luck, but after riding for four days straight in the rain, I think I was due for some good luck.

After we got settled in to the hotel in York Harbor, we went for a walk along the beach. Just before we got back to the hotel, Pat’s Uncle Morg and Aunt Jean drove by. They live about 120 miles north of York Harbor and we had arranged to meet them today to visit for a while and have dinner.

We’re visiting with them now, so I’m going to make this an abbreviated entry for today. Here are some photos from today’s travels:

    Hi Peter & Pat,
In the pictures it looks like you are enjoying your walk on the beach. I know its not recommended but did you take your shoes off and walk barefoot in the water? Too cold? Is this the first time that you have been on the east coast and seen the ocean? The coast of Maine is beautiful. Before we bought our beach house on Cape Cod we vacationed many summers at Camp Ellis which is just a little further north in Saco, ME.

Don’t forget to try a Maine Lobster before you leave York. It’s too bad you don’t have time to visit LLBean in Freeport, ME. You can spend a whole day in that store looking around.

I think this is a rather important moment in this tour. As you stated in another blog - this is the most northern and most eastern point. You can’t go much further east. I guess you can say you are at the half way point in your journey. So again like before “congratulations” and best wishes for the rest of the tour. Happy to see you could share this moment with family. Our best to Jean and Morg. M&D
