June 28: Harvard to Ballardvale, Massachusetts
Believe it or not, I managed to bicycle most of the morning today without getting wet. It was cloudy, but there was none of the rain that they were predicting.
I did a shorter ride today — only 35 miles — for a couple of reasons. First, we needed some time this afternoon to get ourselves ready to drive back down to Manchester, Connecticut for a 6 PM appearance at a diabetes education group meeting at the Manchester Memorial Hospital. Second, we want to spend a night in York Beach, Maine. York Beach represents our northernmost and easternmost destination for The Dream Tour. It seemed appropriate to stay overnight there rather than simply riding in, looking around, turning around and riding out. So, the shorter ride today to Ballardvale leaves a roughly 60 mile ride remaining to get to York Beach.
While I was out riding today, Pat did some sightseeing in nearby Concord. Just outside of Concord, she saw Walden Pond, famous for Henry David Thoreau’s book “On Walden Pond”. She also saw the Minute Man National Historical Park in Concord. At Concord’s North Bridge, she saw the place where, on April 19, 1775, Colonial militia men fired the famous “shot heard ’round the world.”
Here are some picture from our travels today:

Pat and Pete,
Thanks for the photo of Proctor Road. Interestingly, my father was born in Revere, MA near Boston. Also, he told everyone he attended Harvard, which he did - Harvard Elementary. I enjoy every posting and photo. All is well.

Your photos in Massachusetts make me really miss New England. I’ll be there in September but you’ll be far west by then. On my first visit to Walden Pond I was horrified to see (and listen to) droves of kids doing cannonballs off the bank into the pond. Guess they hadn’t read the book.
