May 31: Fancy Gap to Rocky Knob, Virginia

No photos from the ride today. Sorry. The day started out looking very nice. It was a bit cooler because of the clouds. It then started to sprinkle and gradually got raining harder and harder until it was a downpour. Back in Salt Lake City, we don’t get a lot of rain — we’re on the edge of a desert — so this seemed like a major rainstorm to me, but the locals probably considered it simply a “rapid increase to 100% humidity”. Whatever it was, it left me drenched. Even soaking wet, I wasn’t cold though.

I do have a couple photos from AFTER the ride though. The place we’re staying tonight is called Rocky Knob Cabins. It’s about a mile off of the Blue Ridge Parkway and it’s in a little secluded valley where if you were to look around and try to figure out what year it was by what you saw, you’d probably be about a hundred years off. The cabins we’re in are authentic 1936 cabins. They were the barracks for the Civilian Conservation Corps Blue Ridge Parkway work crews. Here’s a picture of the cabin we’re in.

After lunch, we went to see Maybry Mill which is right on the Blue Ridge Parkway. As the brochure says you’ve probably seen Maybry Mill even if you haven’t been here. It’s a very popular photo for calendars, etc. Here’s a couple of my attempts at photographing it.

Lastly, we learned about another flower that we’ve been seeing along the Parkway. It’s the Mountain Laurel.
