May 28: Pineola to Jefferson, North Carolina
Sunday on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In the morning, it’s a quiet, peaceful, even lonely, place. By afternoon, it was a busy place, filled with holiday sightseers. At times, the traffic backed up behind me as drivers waited for a clear view of the road ahead so they could pass.
I saw a few cyclists. Strangely, they were all headed south. I didn’t see a single cyclist headed north. If there were any headed north, I know I wasn’t travelling fast enough to catch up with any of them. In fact, I was travelling very slowly because the climbs from the previous two days (each totalling well over a mile) had left my legs feeling a bit sluggish. So, if there were any headed north, in the five hours or so I was on the Parkway, you’d think that at least one of them would have caught up and passed me.
This is a great time to be on the Parkway. There are so many flowers in bloom. One that you see a lot of is the Rhododendron and the Bluet. Here’s a couple photos that I took today:
The Rhododendron comes in a variety of colors. I can recall seeing white, blue, and the red, as shown above.
