May 24: Brevard to Asheville, North Carolina
I started the ride today wearing a long-sleeved jersey. I haven’t done that in a very long time. Probably not since Arkansas. It was a welcome change even though by late morning I was back into the short-sleeves and the high temperature still reached 82 degrees.
We decided to only go as far as Asheville today. We did this for two reasons. First, my reacquaintance to the mountains yesterday left me a bit tired. When we leave Asheville, our planned route to the northeast starts out with a 25-mile climb to 6000 feet, so I wanted to make sure I did that climb when I was fresh. Second, Asheville is a fairly large city and Pat and I can get a couple prescriptions refilled here.
Pat took a different route than I did today. Pat took a route through the Pisgah Forest that got her onto the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mount Pisgah. That route included a 17-mile climb to about 5500 feet and, like I said, I wasn’t feeling up to that kind of climb today. Here are some photos from her drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
I took a much flatter, but a little longer route in the valley. My ride wasn’t nearly as interesting as her drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but I still have a couple photos to share:
Here’s a link to all of today’s photos:

Hi P&P,
I went to summer camp in Hendersonville, which I believe is near Ashville. I remember the red clay & beautiful scenery. Of course, that was a very very long time ago, but this should be beautiful country/ I follow your emails faithfully,

The Blue Ridge Parkway! That brings back so many good memories. It’s so beautiful through there–lovely pictures. Pat is a lucky person to have traveled there today. Too bad you missed it, but I would have taken the flatter option as well!
