April 23: Columbus, Kansas to Joplin, Missouri

Entering MissouriToday we said goodbye to Kansas and hello to Missouri. It is the eighth state in our 48 state journey.

Besides Missouri, we also encountered another thing we haven’t seen before on The Dream Tour: rain. Or at least the threat of it. The weather forecast is for thunderstorms, pea-sized hail and high winds this afternoon, so we decided to get the bike ride started early to avoid the heat and the bad weather.

The early start plus only a 30-mile ride on the agenda for today means that I arrived at the campground (a KOA) outside of Joplin, Missouri by about 10 AM. Due to the threatening weather, we opted for a cabin instead of setting up the tent.

With the extra time today, we’ll get some things done like finding that quintessential Missouri souvenir (I have no idea what it might be yet. Any suggestions?) and visiting the local visitor information center to find out why Missouri is known as the “Show me” state.

    Hi Pete & Pat,

Congratulations on getting through the longest state in union, Kansas. I presume your arrival at Bentoville is on schedule.
