April 14: Blood Glucose Readings

I forgot to add my blood glucose readings from today at the end of my entry for today’s ride. Not a great day in terms of blood glucose. I had some troubles with lows and highs which I’m not proud of, but you might find it interesting.

Time: Blood Glucose Notes:
6:53 AM 173 Apparently I haven’t yet gotten to the bottom of the nighttime highs. This reading was after a site change the previous night. I programmed a correction bolus of 1.5 units. My guideline for correction bolusus is 1.0 unit of correction for every 50 mg/dl that my blood sugar is over the target. The target is 100 mg/dl, so that gives me 1.5 units of correction. At the same time, I programmed a meal bolus of 5.0 units for the half bagel I was going to have for breakfast. I estimated it at 30 grams of carbohydrate and my carb. ratio at breakfast time is 1.0 unit of insulin for each 6 grams of carbohydrate.
8:34 AM 66 This is my pre-ride test. This is too low and I had lowered my basal rate to 70% of it’s normal rate 30 minutes prior to this test. I had a bagel and 8 ounces of apple juice. By 9 AM, I was feeling OK, so I headed out towards Liberal, Kansas. I need to change my breakfast time carb. ratio to from 1.0 unit per 6 grams of carbohydrate to something like 1.0 per 7.5 grams. I’ll try that for tomorrow.
10:13 AM 75
1:31 PM 63 After arriving in Liberal, Kansas. Again, too low. I hadn’t had lunch yet, so this seemed like a good time to have it.
2:43 PM 75 Too low for one hour post-meal. Had a couple fig newtons and a small peanut butter cookie. I estimated it at 15 grams of carbohydrate.
5:27 PM 200 Sigh. This is a pre-meal test that should be in the 80-120 range. Probably my estimate of 15 grams of carbohydrates was too low.
9:15 PM 86
10:15 PM 139 This is towards the high end of where I like to see it at bedtime. We’ll see what it is in the morning, or, if I wake up at night what it is then.

One Response to “April 14: Blood Glucose Readings”

  1. Bernie Hoogenboom Says:

I think that you are controlling your blood glucose levels pretty well.
The snacks you are eating may not be uniform in sugar content and your level of exercise may not be uniform either out there in the prairie. Do the labels on your bagels and apple juice and cookies give you any help in calculating your carbohydrate intake so that you can better adjust your insulin level? I’m sure that you are doing the best you can. M&D
