April 13: Boise City to Guymon, Oklahoma

My last post about my ride from Clayton, New Mexico to Boise City, Oklahoma was actually a day late. As it turned out, we didn’t have internet access last night so I had to wait until we arrived in Guymon to put that post online.

Before we leave Boise City behind us, did you know it was the only U.S. city to be bombed in World War II? You can read the details here:

We left Boise City early this morning because I needed to be done with my ride, showered, and ready to sound intelligent on the telephone. I had a telephone interview for Diabetes Positive magazine scheduled for 2:30 pm. So, we left Boise City at about 8:15 and I arrived in Guyman, 62 miles down the road, at about 11:55 am. I had a great tailwind again. The only thing that slowed me down today was having to retrace about a mile when I realized I had dropped the case for my camera.

It wasn’t a stressful riding day in terms of intensity. However, the high temperature today in Guyman, Oklahoma was 97 degrees, so it was plenty warm when I arrived at noon. I would guess it must have been around 90 by then. I carried 4 bottles (about 1 liter each) of water with me plus two 12 ounce bottles of apple juice. At the end of the ride, I had about 3/4 of a liter of water left and one bottle of apple juice. I also ate a bagel and a half and a banana during the ride. All of this was without an extra bolus of insulin.

My blood sugars for today are below:

Time: Blood glucose (mg/dl) Comments:
7:13 AM 131 fasting. I think my nighttime and fasting high blood sugars have been solved. Early on in the ride, I had lowered my 10 PM to 8 AM basal rate to 0.5 units/hour and then to 0.45 units/hour. I think that was a bit too low.
9:24 AM 77 one hour into ride. Before starting the ride, I had one bagel with peanut butter. I forgot to reduce my basal rate before starting the ride.
10:28 AM 86
11:21 AM 71 just outside of Guyman
12:20 PM 111 before lunch
1:45 PM 75 after lunch. A bit low, so I had a 8 ounces of apple juice (20 grams carbohydrate)
2:07 PM 91 just before Diabetes Positive interview
3:02 PM 96 just after interview
5:54 PM 91 pre-dinner. Pat and I went to the local grocery store and picked up a sandwich and other picnic supplies. We went to Thompson Park in Guyman. It’s a great park surrounding Sunset Lake.
8:26 PM 88 post-dinner

That heat must be all over. We hit a record high here in Minnesota of 84 degrees. Not much humidity and hope it isn’t too bad down there. M&D

    Making great time!

I’ll try to turn the AC on and keep that fan behind you.

    Pete,
I just read your entire journal. Wow, my butt is almost as sore as yours from sitting at this computer!
This website is great. I will be checking in more regularly. I love the pictures. The one of the Mittens in Monument Valley with the sun and dark clouds just behind the monuments is professional studio quality. Good eye.
    Carpe Diem! Your doing it!
