Rest Day in Cedar City, Utah
Today is a rest day for The Dream Tour.
In the morning, we said goodbyes to our friend Marty who has been riding with us all the way from Salt Lake City. Then we sat down to do some laundry, catch up on some emails, re-organize the car, etc. With all that out of the way, we wandered down the road to the campus of Southern Utah University. Purely by accident, we wandered past the offices for the University Journal. We stopped. Pat and I turned and stared at each other for a second. We were both wondering whether we could walk into their office, announce who we were, and expect them to even care, much less spend some time to interview us. To make a long story short, that’s pretty much what happened. The editor, a very nice young man, spent a good twenty minutes with us, asked some great questions, and told us that he would try to get a photographer out to shoot some pictures in the morning.
He also said that their next issue will be out next Monday (March 27). If the story runs, I’ll try to remember to post an update about it. But, in case I don’t, here’s the web site address for the University Journal:

don’t be shy about PR opportunities!! The more people - with or without diabetes - who hear about your terrific effort, the better!

There was an article on the local news tonight about a woman who rode from Mpls to DC to increase awareness about colon cancer. Her tour was titled the “Ride Your Butt Off Tour” She was doing it because her sister had passed away from the cancer. She had an audience with Norm Coleman (MN Senator) and got some face time on the news. She estimated that she covered about 1300 miles.
Anyway, I’m going to call the local TV folks when you get closer. Free PR is always good.
I’ve been on supported tours before. The, dare I say, “Sag Wagon” is never far away. I think a description of how far away the van is at various times of the day might offer an interesting perspective. How you communicate, etc.
And during those stretches of intolerable headwind have you considered letting the van lead?
Just a thought.

So far, Pat has stayed pretty close. That’s mostly due to weather conditions though. Yesterday (March 24), the weather was good. Windy, but good. So, Pat arrived in Hurricane, Utah well ahead of me.
Today, the weather is supposed to be good again. Highs near 70 degrees. Unfortunately, there are wind advisories out and the National Weather Service says to expect winds from the southwest at 30-35 mph gusting to 40. My ride today takes us to Kanab, Utah via Colorado City on highway 59. I’ll be travelling southeast for about 30 miles, then west for a few miles before I head back to the northeast. The beginning of the ride is going to be tough because of the winds.
I’ll remember to make some notes about where Pat is during the day. Today though, I think she’ll be quite a ways ahead of me except she’s going to meet me at the Arizona border for a few photos — Arizona is our second state!
