The Dream Tour, Day 3: Another snowy day in paradise

Here’s the profile of today’s ride: wind and sun, wind and rain, snow, then snow and howling wind. Rinse and repeat three times.

We had such a range of weather today, it was hard to believe it was only a fifty mile ride.

Dream Tour Day 3: Paul and Pete It was a great day on the bike though. My friend Marty is still riding with me. What a trooper! And my good friend and cycling buddy, Paul, left his house in Salt Lake City at 6:30 AM this morning, drove to within 15 miles of Delta, Utah (our destination for today), and rode back towards Marty and me. When we met, he rode with us all the way to the Delta city limits. That’s about a 75 mile ride for him today. We’ve been riding together for the last five years and this was our last ride together for the next 7 months.

It such a difficult day on the bike, weatherwise, that nobody wanted to stop for very long, including me. I started the ride with BG of 177 after dropping my basal rate by 30%. I felt good and normal BG-wise for the entire ride. During the ride, I had 32 oz. of Gatorade, half a bagel with peanut butter and jam, 2 energy bars (each about 44 grams of carbohydrates). About 15 miles from the end of the ride (Lynndyl, Utah), we stopped at a convenience store because the sun had come out (again). I tested again there and had a reading of 121. I’m always amazed at this when I ride. I can consume nearly 200 grams of carbohydrates and not need an insulin bolus even with my basal rate dropped by 30%. Your mileage may vary, as they say, but this works well for me.
