Glucose Testing While Bicycle Riding
I was out on another training ride today. Sixty-five miles on a sunny, but rather cold day — the high was 48 but that happened before I was even out on the bike. It was a four hour ride and twice during the ride I stopped to test my blood glucose. First one was 94 after about an hour of riding and the second was 73 after about two and a half hours. The second one was a bit lower than I’d like it to be during a ride, so I chugged nearly all of my remaining energy drink (about 40 grams of carbohydrate). I still had two Clif bars in my pocket and this ride never got me more than 30 minutes away from a convenience store. The coolest part of all this is: even when I’m running at 70% of my normal basal rate on my insulin pump, there’s no bolus required.
Some of you might be wondering what I do with my used test strips. The AutoDisc test strips used by the Bayer DEX meter are fairly small. Sometimes I wedge them into a seam in the wallet that I store the DEX meter in. Recently though, I’ve started wedging them into the space between the end of the stem extension and the stem clamp. Here’s a picture from my ride today.
