Training Outside in January
After being in Phoenix last week without my bicycle and then finishing up projects at work this past week, I haven’t had much for training time in the last couple weeks. I’ve been able to squeeze in a few indoor training sessions, but no outside riding.
So, I’ve been looking forward to today as my first opportunity to get out mid-day for a ride. Unfortunately, the weather reports for today were for increasing chances of snow. Around lunchtime, I saw overcast skies, but the roads were still dry, so I headed out. I figured if I stayed close to home, I could make a hasty retreat if the weather turned nasty.
Well, it was nice for about 45 minutes — long enough for me to forget about trying to stay close to home. I just headed out on some of my standard summertime training routes and by the time it started snowing, I was near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. That’s about 8 miles from home. Still, it wasn’t snowing real hard and I was staying warm. My biggest concern is that the temperatures were dropping and that meant ice would be forming on the roads.
But, I made it home safe and sound. An hour and 20 minutes outside. Not bad for a January ride in Salt Lake City. I tried taking a picture after my ride, but didn’t have much luck with the exposure settings. I was getting cold and this was the best one before I decided it was time to go inside and warm up.
